Sept. 24, 2020 – SOO Green is a proposed high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line that will run underground along existing transportation corridors from Mason City, Iowa, to Yorkville, Illinois near Chicago. The project will connect two of the largest electricity markets in the U.S., delivering abundant renewable energy from Iowa and the upper Midwest to communities in the east. The project will encourage the development of new renewable power generation in Iowa and directly invest over $446 million in the state.
“SOO Green continues to make substantial progress and the IUB filing marks another important development milestone,” said Direct Connect CEO Trey Ward. “This is a cutting-edge project that will benefit Iowa’s economy, energy grid, and ratepayers.”
SOO Green’s underground installation within existing railroad rights of way minimizes effects on nearby landowners and the environment. The transmission cables are safe for humans, animals, the environment and railroad operations. And by installing cables underground the line will be less vulnerable to extreme weather events, increasing grid resiliency.
